Burgos to Hornillos

Good thing we got new gloves! Lots and lots of rain today. It doesn't even matter that the gloves aren't waterproof, because all our waterproof stuff failed today. At first I felt that my toes were a little damp, and then the floodgates opened and my feet were sloshing. We are trying to dry our boots and in-soles now, but the radiator heaters in our room aren't working very well. We nabbed one of the 7 private rooms in this town hoping that we could dry our stuff, another lesson I suppose! When we were over at the alberge, visiting with friends from the trail, the owner started up a blazing fire. All those friends that got a bed there are happily drying their boots by the Woodstove.
The hike today was nice and easy (except for the rain). The path out of Burgos was so much more pleasant than that industrial slog yesterday. Parks, university grounds and quiet bedroom communities marked our miles out of the city, much appreciated! Passing through a couple of quiet old towns, we ended up here in Hornillos. Our bag was at the municipal alberge, but there weren't enough beds there for us so we got the second to last room at the only other place in town. We have a very nice room, but like I said the heater isn't working!
Today we met a couple of people that just started their trek today or yesterday. Katie from Arizona walked with us from lunch on. She is a young woman who put her belongings in storage and quit her job to do this. She hopes to find work teaching English here in Spain, when she finishes the hike. The other newbie is an older woman from France. We took care of her ginormous blister this evening. She is hiking in teva type sandals due to big bunions that make shoes hurt. I think that blister is going to give her more problems than a good fitting shoe would. Hope she is going to be ok.
This is such a small town that there is only one place to eat. So we had pleasant company at our dinner table. Judy from Nebraska is still bravely marching on despite bleeding blisters, nice to reconnect with her. And Paul from the Netherlands joined us. It was a really nice evening!

  1. What a great trip to meet people. That's one of the best part of traveling. Do you have any layovers planned?
